Société d'histoire de Pointe-Saint-Charles

Welcome to our site!

Although its main purpose is to inform members of its doings and activities, we also hope it will shed some light on our history and what this neighbourhood is all about. Just southwest of the first European settlement on the island of Montreal, this little corner is full of history and surprises.

The name Pointe Saint Charles was at first restricted to a point of land jutting into the Saint Lawrence just south of the old port of Montreal. Today, its boundaries are well established, but such was not always the case. Visit our site and find out how this area with few geographic markings aside from the Saint-Lawrence River, but now clearly defined by man’s intervention : freeways, canal, and railroads, grew into the country’s first center of transportation, industry and communications. The story behind all this infrastructure is worth telling.
